We Scare Hunger

Auburn Bay School is partnering with the Calgary Food Bank once again this October to help fight hunger in our community.

We Scare Hunger is made possible with the support of Help Hunger Disappear®, Campbell Canada’s national hunger awareness and food drive program. Since 2008, Help Hunger Disappear® reminds us that we can all play a part in helping the more than 900,000 Canadians who rely on their local food banks every month.

The Auburn Bay School We Scare Hunger Campaign officially begins Tuesday, October 1st and will end October 31st. We invite you to be a part of the change our students are working hard to create. Students have been asked to bring in food bank items throughout the next month. Last year we brought in 1720 pounds of food. This year, our school goal is to collect 1800 pounds of food!

To give you an idea of how much food that is, the average family of 4 people receive an estimated 125 pounds worth of food, filling approximately 2 grocery carts per family. So, if we divvy up the 1720 pounds worth of food collected last year, this amount supported about 14 families, filling 28 grocery carts with food. (Calgary Food Bank) The Calgary Food Bank Wish List can be found here https://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/wishlist/ Please only send non-perishable donation items.

Together we can make a difference.

Thank You,

Auburn Bay School

We had a great start to Library School! We spent some time this morning learning a little about the library and it''s story of being built.  The students did a scavenger hunt to explore the first 2 floors of the library and sketched and wrote about their discoveries.  In the afternoon, Janice from Calgary Story met with us to introduce to the section of the library that has many old books, magazines, news articles and various other media that tells about the history of Calgary. A big thank you to our parent volunteers today.

Our exiting week at library school is almost here.  We will be leaving Monday morning at 8:10am so please help your child to arrive to school by 8am for attendance.  Students will need to bring a snack, lunch and water bottle.  We will be having some possible outdoor times throughout the week so students will need proper outdoor clothing for the potentially cooler temperatures.

Parent volunteers will need to sign into the office and can meet us at the front of the school by the office to load the bus.

We watched a video about Terry Fox today in preparation for the Terry Fox run tomorrow.  Students should dress in comfortable clothing for the run in the afternoon. We talked about bringing a toonie for Terry tomorrow as well. After hearing about Terry Fox's goal to run across Canada, we examined a map of Canada and started to color the map.  Ask your child what they know about the provinces and territories in Canada.

We are almost done our Annne of Green Gables read aloud. Ask your child to tell you about some of the trouble Anne has gotten into in the book Anne of Green Gables.

Students were excited to start some coding on the computer today.  The website we used was: code.org.  This is a free website that students can access at home.

HELP: We still need one more volunteer for our half day at Library School on Friday, October 4.  Please email Mrs. Cooper if you can help us out.

Please see our list of words for this week word work below.  Our sight words this week are: first, people, know, through, write.

We are beginning to work on understanding numbers to 1000 in math this week.  We will be doing various games and activities to practice making numbers, recognizing numbers and writing numbers to 1000.  Students are encouraged to practice basic facts for addition and subtraction to 20 at home to increase fluency.  Using die and cards are great ways to make this practice more fun.

We have been practicing journalling techniques to prepare for Library school next week.  Today we learned a technique called Looking at Architecture.  We used a picture of the Saddledome to explore the physical features, construction, adaptations and value.

FIELD TRIP PAYMENT

Some parents have had some difficulties with making payments with Power School for the field trip.  If you are wanting to pay online through PowerSchool it works when using the website and on a computer. The app on a phone doesn't seem to have payment options.  Hopefully this helps resolve some of the issues.

We are still needing a few volunteers for Wednesday and Friday for the field trip so please email me if you can help out.

Thank you

On the day of the run, it is important that students wear appropriate outside shoes for walking/running along with dressing appropriately for the weather that day. Parents are welcome to join us for this event out on the soccer field at 1:45 PM on Wednesday, September 25th. The Terry Fox Run will last approximately 15 minutes and students will line up with their homeroom teacher to go back inside for the remainder of the afternoon when we have finished. We kindly ask parents to wait outside while this is happening and to pick up your child from their normal dismissal spot.

Yesterday we started our word work. Each day of the week the students do a variety of word work activities to practice their words.  Students were given a group that they will be in and yesterday they copied their words into a list and then sorted them into word pattern categories.  This week we are exploring ay, ai, and a-e words.  Today the students put their words into alphabetical order and made a list of rhyming words.  Tomorrow they will choose 5 words to make 5 really amazing sentences.  Thursday will be practice using a variety of tools such as magnetic letters, buddha boards, letter tiles and keyboarding.  On Friday, the students will do a blind sort test with a partner.  Each week I will post the list of words that we are working on.

The field trip forms for Library School will be coming home soon.  PLEASE let me know if you can volunteer by emailing me at cacooper@cbe.ab.ca . We will need 4-5 volunteers each day.  All volunteers will be required to have a completed CBE security clearance.  Thank you

Our four books that we read for our BOOK A DAY this week were:

We took a vote and My New Teacher and Me! was the favorite for this week.

We started MATH ABOUT ME today.  The students wrote 5-10 questions about themselves that have a number as an answer and then created an equation for that number.  For example, How old Am I? - 3+2+2+1=8.

After music and fresh air break we wrote in our writing journals about ourselves so that Mrs. Cooper can get to know each student better.

First Day of School September 3

It was very exciting to meet our class today!  We started our day reading First Day Jitters and we all enjoyed the surprise ending.  This was our first picture book that we read as part of our 180 day book challenge.  We will be reading a picture book everyday and keeping track of the books we have read and then choosing our favorite book at the end of each week.

The students participated in various getting to know you activities including Roll a Topic, Name Circle, and Math human Bingo.  We also did a quick tour of the school and took our class picture outside.  As a whole class we brainstormed for a word that describes our class and THOUGHTFUL was the word that the students voted for.  After reading Quick as a Cricket, the students choose a word that describes themselves and started to create word art to show the word.

To start our afternoon I introduced the students to Mindful Practice and Zentangle which are activities that help relax our brains and body to get ready to learn.

We also had our welcome back assembly this afternoon and a little time to go outside for a fresh air break.

The students are bringing home their Home Communication folder.  This will come home every night and needs to be returned to school each day.  It is in a ziplock bag to help protect it so it will last the year.  Inside the folder is a calendar that the students can use to record the number of minutes they read at home each day.  Please help your child fill this out after reading each night and then return it to the folder.

We are having an OPEN HOUSE on Thursday, September 5 from 5-6 to give students a chance to show their parents their classroom and to meet the teacher!
